Just a 10-minute drive from the campsite, the Ferme des Bisons de l’Oisans is a must-see if you’re staying in the Alps with children. You’ll meet Didier, a breeder who returned to his native land in 2004. He’ll share with you his passion for his profession and his love for an animal that’s atypical in our region: the American bison. During your visit, which lasts between one and two hours, you’ll get up close to the bison and watch Didier at work. You’ll see him interacting with his animals and carrying out his daily tasks. He’ll answer all your questions and invite the kids to help him with his activities.

Description of the Ferme des Bisonsde l’Oisans

This forty-hectare estate is located in the heart of the Oisans region. The setting is perfect for a family or romantic getaway, or a nature outing with friends. The location is all the more attractive for its panoramic view of the Grandes Rousses massif.
Visitors to the Ferme des Bisons de l’Oisons will find bison, of course, but also Merino sheep. The lambs and ewes spend the summer in the mountains between 2,300 and 3,000 meters above sea level, in the La Bérarde valley (commune of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans).
Didier Girard is a member of the “Route des savoir-faire de l’Oisans”: “a gateway to the mountain culture of Uissans, its rich heritage and its many different skills”, as the Oisans.com website puts it. Like many other producers, as well as local craftsmen and artists, our farmer devotes his time to sharing his know-how and passion with the general public, in the form of a one- or two-hour event. Didier is one of those passionate personalities you’re sure to come across on the “Route des savoir-faire de l’Oisans”.

Bison meat saleat Ferme des Bisons de l’Oisans

On Didier Girard’s farm, the bison feed on grass and hay. The farmer takes care not to fatten them. The aim is to offer meat that is high in protein but low in cholesterol. It’s also a meat rich in iron.
The owner of Ferme des Bisons de l’Oisans offers tender, tasty meat. Visitors will find the same cuts as in beef: steak, rib, pavé, fondue piece, civet piece, pot-au-feu piece. Prices range from €26 to €36 per kilo.

Didier Girard also offers charcuterie:

  • Terrine (70% bison): €10 (195 g)
  • Sausage (80% bison): 35 €/kg (about 10 €/piece)
